Next Up, a Big Weekend

Northlake Nature Center on Saturday and the Rainbow Festival and GNOIS Potted Iris Sale in the Sculpture Garden on Sunday

The last weekend in March will be full of iris opportunities.  On Saturday, the Northlake Nature Center in Mandeville celebrates the bloom on all five species of Louisiana irises.  This will be after the first full season of growth since they were planted.  Add to these many native Iris virginica that have long grown on the site. The Northlake Nature Center is one of the few spots in the country to see all these iris species in a single place.  See more on Northlake here (and use return arrow go come back to this page).

On Sunday, the annual Louisiana Iris Rainbow Festival in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden in City Park highlights the huge variety of hybrid cultivars.  They can all trace their ancestry to the species one will see at Northlake, but the development of the hybrids since the 1930s is striking to see.

GNOIS will offer a large variety of these hybrids for sale in its potted plant sale.  The sale begins when the Sculpture Garden opens at 10AM, and it would be wise to be early for the best selection.  The remainder of the day will be a low key opportunity to enjoy the Garden and view the irises.  Members of GNOIS will be around all day to answer questions and to enjoy the irises themselves.
